Nigeria Sends Largest Delegation to International Labour Conference Amid Economic Challenges
Nigeria has sent the largest delegation to the 112th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland, despite facing significant economic challenges and high national debt. According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Nigeria's delegation of 289 members is the largest among the 187 countries represented, led by Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha. The delegation includes 108 government delegates, 62 employers' delegates, and 116 workers' delegates.
This extensive participation occurs as the World Bank has approved $2.25 billion to support Nigeria’s economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy and enhancing fiscal sustainability. Key reforms include unifying exchange rates, adjusting gasoline prices, and tightening monetary policy. A targeted cash transfer program is also being implemented to aid economically insecure households.
The ILC, ending on June 14, addresses issues such as worker protection from climate change, the care economy, and fundamental rights at work. Meanwhile, Nigerian labour unions are in conflict with the government over a new minimum wage, with recent tensions leading to a suspended nationwide strike. Despite domestic challenges, Nigeria's large delegation underscores its commitment to global labour discussions.
