First Human Case of H5N2 Bird Flu Reported in Mexico
A Mexican man, the first confirmed human case of H5N2 bird flu, died on April 24, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported. The 59-year-old, who had multiple underlying health conditions and no known exposure to poultry or other animals, experienced fever, shortness of breath, diarrhea, and nausea before his death. The WHO noted that while H5N2 has been found in poultry in Mexico, including recent outbreaks in Michoacan and the State of Mexico, the source of his infection remains unknown. The risk to the public is considered low, and no additional human cases have been found. Mexican health authorities are monitoring nearby farms and wildlife to detect further cases.
